Referee Report from 3/19/2011

"On a chilly and blustery day, the last day of winter, the University of Connecticut and Northeastern took to UConn's beautiful new Depot Campus pitch to kick off the spring season. Both sides demonstrated a decent level of fitness given that this was the first time either had been on grass since the fall. UConn's more experienced side set its backs loose immediately, with breakaway tries from their No. 11 wing and fullback within the first six minutes of play. Northeastern finally settled into a defensive game and held off further attacks until the 34th minute, when UConn drove over from a 5-meter scrum. After a number of personnel changes at the half, UConn moved the game to the inside, with four of their five second-half tries coming through the back row, including three by No. 8 Alycia Washington. Northeastern never let down, but couldn't find the answer to the bigger and more physical UConn team. Final score: 48 (8 tries, 4 conversions) - 0." -referee Dean Jorgensen

Alycia Washington joins U20 Women Eagles again

Our junior 8 man Alycia Washington was invited to the USA Rugby U20 womens national team camp from March 3-6 in Cocoa, Florida. Once again, Alycia impressed the coaches at the try-outs and will join the U20 Women Eagles as they represent the United States in the Womens U20 Nations Cup this summer. The USA team will compete against England, Canada, South Africa, and other U20 national teams.

Alycia Washington plays nationally!

Our very own Alycia Washington played at a national level this summer. Please read below for further detail on her experiences.

After five hard days of tryouts and fitness tests in beautiful, sunny Santa Barbara, the head coach for the women's national u20 team invited me to go on their 10 day tour in the Bahamas. The team was registered to play in the North American Caribbean Rugby Association Championship. In preparation for the tour, I worked out 6 days a week mostly focusing on lifting, sprints and agility. When I arrived in the Bahamas, I was in the best shape I could have been in, but I was definitely not prepared for how oppressively humid it was. We had no choice but to suck it up and did what the coaches told us so we drank water and Gatorade nonstop and tried to ignore the heat. Switching from 8 man to lock was also harder than I thought, but I started to catch on after lots of help from my coaches. After two days of two-a-day practices, we were ready to face the Cayman Islands and beat them 85-0. We brought the same energy into our next game against the Caribbean Select Side and won 30-7. Our next hurdle was Canada. After a hard fought game without a try from either side we ended up losing 3-6. Our coach was very proud with how hard we fought, he believed losing a game to penalty kicks showed a lot about us. Saying goodbye to my new USA family was tough, but I was consoled by how much I knew I walked away with. I got a chance to play 3 full games under some of the best coaches USA has to offer, meet 23 amazing, new players from across the country, gain a lot of new knowledge about the game to bring back to my team, and two international caps. We also got to keep a lot of the gear from our sponsors that I will be wearing at UConn all year. Most importantly, I got a chance to see how bright the future for women's rugby is in the USA. Those girls have the heart to make it all the way to the Olympics in 2016. Being part of this team was a truly great experience and since I am still eligible for another year, I am very excited to try out again next summer.
